The injection is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used for the short-term treatment of serious bacterial infections of the lungs, skin, abdomen, blood, brain, urinary tract, bones, and joints. This injection kills or stops the growth of bacteria causing the infection.

Amikacin injection is in a class of medications called aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

Antibiotics such as amikacin injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using an amikacin injection.

Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain tests, including hearing tests, before and during treatment to check your body’s response to amikacin.
