Cefpodoxime-200 (Intepod-200)

Cefpodoxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by preventing them from making their own protective covering.

What is cefpodoxime used for?

• Throat and tonsil infections (strep throat, tonsillitis)
• Pneumonia
• COPD flare-ups caused by infection

• Typical dosing for cefpodoxime

  Adults and adolescents age 12 years and older:

  • Gonorrhea: Take 200 mg by mouth one time only.
  • Strep throat or tonsillitis: Take 100 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days.
  • Urinary tract infection: Take 100 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 7 days.
  • Pneumonia, COPD flare-up, or sinus infection: Take 200 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days.
  • Skin infection: Take 400 mg by mouth every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days.

  Children ages 2 months to 12 years old (dose based on weight):

  • Ear infection: Take 50 mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours for 5 days. Each dose should not be more than 200 mg.
  • Sinus infection: Take 50 mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours for 10 days. Each dose should not be more than 200 mg.
  • Strep throat or tonsillitis: Take 50 mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours for 5 to 10 days. Each dose should not be more than 100 mg.

  Is cefpodoxime a strong antibiotic?

  Cefpodoxime is an “extended-spectrum” antibiotic, which means that it works against a good number of bacteria. There are other antibiotics that can treat more types of infections, or more serious infections. “Stronger” antibiotics are not always the best choice, though. Your provider will choose the antibiotic that is best for you.

  Finish all of the cefpodoxime your healthcare provider prescribed for you, even if you start to feel better. Stopping cefpodoxime too soon can cause your infection to come back and be harder to treat.

  Take the tablet version of cefpodoxime with food to help it be absorbed best by your body. The liquid version does not need to be taken with food, although food can help with stomach-related side effects like diarrhea.
