Clarithromycin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication can also be used in combination with anti-ulcer medications to treat certain types of stomach ulcers. It may also be used to prevent certain bacterial infections. Clarithromycin is known as a macrolide antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as the common cold, or flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.

Side Effects

Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and changes in taste may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including hearing loss, mental/mood changes, muscle weakness, eye problems (such as drooping eyelids, blurred vision), trouble speaking, persistent nausea/vomiting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, dark urine, yellowing of eyes or skin.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including fever that doesn’t go away, new or worsening lymph node swelling, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
